Courier wins 5 NNPA Awards, including top award for ‘newspaper excellence’

Real Times Media publications, the New Pittsburgh Courier and Michigan Chronicle, brought home multiple honors at the 2022 National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) Messenger Awards, held on June 23 at the NNPA’s annual convention in New Orleans.

The Courier and Chronicle have been known for historically producing culturally relevant content that emotionally and authentically engages the African American community.

The Courier won 5 awards, including first place in America for “Newspaper Excellence.” The Courier also won first place in America for “Social/Criminal Justice,” for the story, “African Americans in Pittsburgh arrested six times as much as Whites in 2020.” The story, which was written by the Courier’s Rob Taylor Jr., was published in the Courier on March 17, 2021. The Courier won third place honors in the “Health” category, for the story, “A Ray of Hope; Support growing for Black mothers who experience stillbirths.” The story was written by the Courier’s Rob Taylor Jr. and appeared in the Dec. 1, 2021, edition. The Courier also took home third place honors for best website and best sports coverage.

“For decades, the New Pittsburgh Courier has been a beacon of hope, inspiration, and a trusted vehicle for Black expression,” said Courier Editor and Publisher Rod Doss. “It’s such a great honor to receive acknowledgment for our continuous efforts to invoke change within our communities as well as serve as a tool for social progress. Thank you to the NNPA Fund, and congratulations to all of this year’s winners.”

The Michigan Chronicle won three awards, including second place for best special edition, and third place awards for newspaper excellence and entertainment coverage.

The Baltimore Afro took home “Newspaper of the Year” honors.
